Santa Marta itself is a
tranquil resort town, where Colombians flock to enjoy the sandy beaches and cool
waters during the hot summer. Nearby coral reefs provide excellent spots for
diving, and jetskis can be rented on the beach. If you aren't comfortable taking
one around yourself, you can usually get a ride.
There are also plenty of
vendors along the beach selling anything your traveling soul desires. The goods
can be had quite cheap if you're a good haggler - usually aim for 2000-3000
pesos below the asking price.
Nearby village Taganga is a
haven for backpackers and divers. Super-inexpensive, with great diving and a
laid-back vibe, Taganga is just 5 miles from Santa Marta and can be reached by
bicycle or van from carrera 1.
If you tire of the beach and
are looking for some more activity, try the six-day trek to nearby Ciudad
Perdida, the lost city, an ancient ruins site in the jungle. Organize a tour
through the agency Turcol, located in town, or check with your hostel, which may
be able to help you with reservations. Be careful though, the area around the
trek has been known to be the site of guerilla activity in the past.
Both Santa Marta and Taganga
are backpacker havens, great places to put down your pack, kick back on the
beach, and relax for a few days without running through all your pesos. There
are plenty of cheap hostels in both towns and activities and prices geared
towards budget travelers. Clear blue water, sandy beaches, and beautiful
sunshine guarantee that your trip to Santa Marta will be the highlight of your
Colombian vacation.
