Belem, (literally "Bethlehem") is the capital city of the state of Para and is located on the shores of the Amazon estuary, in the northern area of Brazil. The city sits just 100 km upriver from the Atlantic Ocean and functions as the entrance to the Amazon, providing a busy port, bus station and an airport. The city itself is unique in the fact that it is built atop a number of small islands that are all interconnected by channels and smaller rivers. If passing through this unique area, make sure to explore these great places:
- Goeldi Museum: This rare museum features a world famous ethnological and zoological collection on the Amazon. The museum offers not only a zoological-botanical garden, but is also a shelter to snakes, monkeys, birds, manatees and alligators. Along with the rare opportunity to witness the animals of the Amazon, the museum features a wonderful collection of Indian artifacts, including Marajoara ceramics and old photos.
- Praca de Republica: Situated just a short stroll from the waterfront, this plaza is home to the Teatro da Paz theater and is one of the most beautiful spaces in the city.
- Nightlife: The city of Belem offers some great bars and clubs where one can truly experience Brazilian soul and dancing. The Samba shows in the area are spectacular!
- As Docas: This area is the site of the old port docks. The docks have been recently renovated and now offer visitors a great place to enjoy history, shopping and delicious restaurants.
- Cidade Velha: Set in the older part of Belem, this beautiful neighborhood is littered with stunning French style mansions and is a great place for an afternoon stroll.
