Nightlife in Cartagena on 06/04/10 by Alexandria Prain

cartagena-noche

While, many North Americans still seem to be a bit hesitant about Cartagena, Colombia, fact of the matter is the city is fast becoming one of South America's most vivacious and fun tourist destination, rivaling the Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires alike. If you are looking for some Latin flare, but also want to experience something more off the beaten path than Mexico or the Dominican Republic, Cartagena may be your perfect new playing ground.

Cartagena itself is divided into two sections, the Ciudad Antigue, with El Centro being its main area, and the Ciudad Nueva with Boca Grande as it main focus. El Centro, is the old colonial section of the city and provides for about 80 % of the city's nightlife. Here visitors can enjoy quiet cobblestone streets, ancient forts, and if you are feeling particularly nostalgic horse- draw carriage rides. Only a short cab ride away from all of the historic sites are the casinos, bars and clubs. Make sure to check out Café del Mar while in this part of town. If you go before dark, you can see a spectacular sunset, while sipping on one of their many delicious cocktails. Casablanca is another great place to head to, if you feel like busting a move on the dance floor. The club is loud with decent music and a great balcony that overlooks the square. Another favorite is Tu Candela, which offers partygoers the chance to not only enjoy a fun dance scene, but also be able to sit and chat at the bar in the downstairs area. The bar is decorated with exotic tribal masks, seashells, bongo drums and old transistor radios.

Boca Grande offers some nightlife to Cartagena as well. Located near the beach is this modern and hip district of town that features high-rise apartments, condos and hotels. Most places in the area are nestled on or near the beach, making the scene a little calmer than El Centro. On the beach opposite the street of El Dorado, there are two great bars that offer great and unusual concoctions for cocktails. If rolling dice, or testing your arm strength on a slot machines sounds more appealing, head over to the areas popular casinos, Casino Atlantis and Casino la Perla del Caribe.

Beyond the cost, its more social. You meet polepe you wouldn't meet otherwise. So it depends on what kind of experience you want. Also, say a hostel in a city costs €20 and the cheapest hotel costs €25. The hostel might very well be nicer, because that's on the higher end of what a hostel costs (depending of course on where you are) versus a very cheap price for a hotel. The hostel might be cleaner, have a freindlier staff and be more pleasant than a hotel that costs so little. Also, private rooms in hostels are like having the privacy of a hotel but without the cost, if you don't want anything incredibly special but just want a place to lay your head at night and spend a little downtime. In hotels, you often pay for lots of services (gym, concierge, pretty lobby, swimming pool) that you may or may not need or want.
