Ilha Grande on 05/04/10

ilha-grande A True Chance to Experience Paradise!

Situated just of the coast of the Rio de Janeiro state, is the island of Ilha Grande or the Big Island. A rather undeveloped island, the area provides its visitors with some of the world's last untainted beaches and landscapes. The island is around 193 km , with its highest point at Pico da Pedra D' gua , reaching1031 m. This area of the mountain was at one point home to a very important prison, though have no fear it has been closed for years.

The whole island of Ilha Grande is a protected area, with the majority of the land being protected under the Ilha Grande State Park. There is also a small area where eco-tourism has been allowed to prosper, allowing visitors a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience this breathtaking island.

Ilha Grande is home to one of the most beautiful Atlantic rainforests still left in Brazil and is home to one of the most important and vast ecosystems in the world. Today, the island holds some of the world's most endangered species, including, but not limited to, the brown howler monkey, the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the red-ruffed fruit-cow. The waters around the island are also protected and offer visitors the rare chance to experience a special blend of temperate, sub-tropical and tropical marine life. Another unique aspect of the waters around the island is the fact that they may be the only waters in the world where one can see tropical fish and corals, swimming alongside Southern white whales and Magellanic penguins.

While the tourist area of the island is small, it does offer visitors a truly unique opportunity enjoy nature. The entire island is road-less and off-limits to cars. It also provides over 150 km of hiking trails that all connect the few quaint coastal villages, with charming lodging, to breathtaking beaches, waterfalls, mountains and untouched tropical forests.  Make sure to have a look at this great location: Hostels in Ilha Grande
