Medellin, the New Generation Tourist Destination

Some great hostels in Medellin at the bottom of the article

The "City of Eternal Spring", Medellin is blessed with an excellent climate and considered to be the one of most beautiful cities in South America.  It is home to three million residents who have the reputation being hard-working hard-playing people. Best known for its culture and cheerful people, it is also home to the most beautiful and sincere women of the world. Most of Colombia's beauty queens and fashion models hailed from this equally stunning city. Increasingly a cosmopolitan city and a tourist destination, Medellin is a world-class modern and vibrant metropolis which is Colombia's second largest city.  It sits above the Aburra Valley at the Andes Range lending the city a perfect climate characterized by a humid subtropical quality and stunning natural scenery. The city is one of the fastest growing cities in South America yet modernization has not touched its authentic local character. The residents are very hospitable and are known to be South America's friendliest and refined people who are fun-loving and genial.

City Attractions. The Botanical Gardens located within the surroundings of the University of Antioquia near the Planetario Municiapl and the Parque Norte is the sanctuary of a wide array of Colombian animal and plant species.  It features an orchid garden, a small country village, and an ecologic train as well as a research center. Found in the heart of Medellin housed in the former Hacienda Sanata Fe, Santa Fe Zoo was founded in 1959 and is home to one thousand and four hundred animal species.  It offers visitors the exciting experience to come near the animals and their world.  Night safaris are featured which provide the visitors the opportunity to seek nocturnal animals which are rarely seen during the day visits. Most popular among the local people is the Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot which made available outstanding facilities for about fifty different sports.  This stadium is currently the best in Latin America and features a main coliseum, a football stadium, tennis club, skating rink, an Olympic pool, a jockey field, and a cycle track.  Also found in the heart of the city is the famous Nutibara Hill that sits in a place name Pueblita Paisa that consists of quaint houses, a school, a church, and a mayor's office.  This wooded area is a replica of the traditional Colombian little town that has a colonial theme and also includes a central square, fountain, and prominent sculptures that depict the original state of the town of about 100 years ago. This perfect elevation provides an unrestricted 360 view of the city. Up-to-date technical equipment is displayed in the Planetarium Jesus Emilio Ramirez.  This contemporary dome structure features fully equipped hall that can accommodate three hundred people.  Heavenly bodies can be experienced in this outstanding structure whereby powerful telescopes and permanent thematic exhibits provide real outer space adventure to all audiences of all ages.  Also housed here are an auditorium, a library, and an internet library. The in-spot for nightlife is the district called El Poblado where the Parque Lleras is found. This place is also known as Zona Rosa which is the heart of the city's nightlife.  Open-air restaurants, discos, and bars are among entertainment spots found here.  Non-stop fun, beautiful single women, and friendly people are here to make any visitor's night exciting. Medellin has its fair share of accommodations that welcome visitors to their confines.  Upscale luxurious hotels, guesthouses as well as low budget hostels are in and around the city to cater to a wide range of new generation globetrotting individuals who are highly-strung on experiencing this upcoming tourist destination.

a lot of hostels have ckhitens. it's nice to be able to cook sometimes, esp. if you're travelling for a long while. and you meet so many lovely people in hostels from all over the world, they can also tell you things about other destinations that you wouldn't find in a guide book. if money weren't an option, i'd still stay in hostels more than not. i'm not super social and into going out and all that but i just ended up meeting the most interesting, amazing people travelling. i've stayed with a couple i met in a hostel when i visited their country, i dated a boy i met in a hostel whom i'm still very close to.

Beyond the cost, its more social. You meet pploee you wouldn't meet otherwise. So it depends on what kind of experience you want. Also, say a hostel in a city costs €20 and the cheapest hotel costs €25. The hostel might very well be nicer, because that's on the higher end of what a hostel costs (depending of course on where you are) versus a very cheap price for a hotel. The hostel might be cleaner, have a freindlier staff and be more pleasant than a hotel that costs so little. Also, private rooms in hostels are like having the privacy of a hotel but without the cost, if you don't want anything incredibly special but just want a place to lay your head at night and spend a little downtime. In hotels, you often pay for lots of services (gym, concierge, pretty lobby, swimming pool) that you may or may not need or want.
