Nosara, Costa Rica on 20/03/10

Long described as “No Shoes No Shirt Nosara,” this great beach area of Costa Rica has long been a part of the yoga and surf community, as well as more sophisticated travelers looking for pristine and untouched beaches and adventure. The stunning sands of Nosara have long been protected thanks to Costa Rica’s superb national park system, as well as locals who have fought to keep their pride land clean.

The Playa Nosara area consists of the quaint village of Nosara and the two beach communities of Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada. In recent years, Playa Guiones has become increasingly more popular thanks largely to its unique surf. This long un-crowed beach provides some of the world’s best surfers shoulder to over head high waves 99 out of 100 days. Though large, the waves are considered rather friendly and forgiving, making this area perfect for anyone from a beginner to an intermediate. Short boarders tend to prefer low tide, as waves are quite a bit steeper and quicker, while mid to high tide is much preferred by beginners and long boarders. Another plus to this area, is that there is little to no localism while in the water, a rare treat for all to enjoy!

The Nosara Yoga Institute opened its first retreat in 1994, inviting yogis from all over the world to discover the unspoiled sands of Nosara. Today, the area is home to a number of retreat centers that offer anything from teacher training, to private and open classes.

Fishing is another extremely popular pastime off the beaches of Nosara. Due to its unique marine geology, which consists of an offshore ledge that attracts deep-water fish fairly close to the shore, there is near good fishing guaranteed year round. Most fishing charters head out from Playa Garza and Playa Pelada, providing excursions anywhere from one hour to all day. Spear fishing and shoreline fishing are also available in some areas. The main catches tend to be yellow fin tuna, marlin, both black and blue, sailfish, Dorado, snapper, Bonita, and sea bass.

Another exciting activity is the guided tours to watch turtles lay their eggs in the Ostionale Reserve, located just  45 minutes north of Nosara. About once ever month, particularly during the rainy season, thousands of turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs, during what is called the arribada.
