
While known for its historical importance, as the ancient Incan capital, the city of Cusco also boasts some of the most impressive and creative gastronomy in all of Peru. Sitting in the Andean mountains, this charming and ancient city offers stunningly lush hills, gorgeous plazas, beautiful colonial architecture and mouth-watering Peruvian and internationally influenced dishes. Our favorite places to stop and grab a bite, whether a quick snack before you head out on a true adventure to Machu Picchu, or a savory and delicious meal are:
They Eat What: Peruvian food is bar-none some of the most delicious in the world, they do however have a few out of the ordinary dishes so be ready to taste some things you may never have though would be on your dinner plate, including rabbit and guinea pig "pepian."
1. La Quinta Eulalia: This great traditional eatery, located just a few minutes from Plaza de Armas, this place offers some of the city's most delicious traditional cuisine. They even offer the famous cuy chactado (guinea pig fried with potatoes, tamales and rocoto.
2. Map Cafe: A little on the pricer end of things, Map Cafe offers a unique blend of Peruvian flavors. From their mouth watering Lamb shank, to their goat cheese and honey maki, this place is a gem, if you don't mind spending a little extra. Prices range from $10-20USD.
A True Bang for Your Buck:1. Pacha Papa: A long time favorite, Pacha Papa offers wonderful traditional Andean cuisine set amongst a beautiful courtyard. Try their delicious sopa de quinoa and for the more adventurous the "gulash de alpaca".
2. Coco Loco: A fast food joint that has a great mix of Peruvian and international snacks. This place is open late, making it a perfect after clubbing snack spot.
Simply Sublime:1. Macondo: Offering amazing Novo Andean and Amazonian cuisine, on top of funky and inspiring art work, this delicious restaurant is a must stop at. From their yuquitas stuffed with chimbivalcano cheese, their great vegetarian curry and even more impressive dessert list, Macondo is a definite favorite that won't disappoint.
2. Don Estenban & Don Pancho Cafe Gourmet: This lovely european-style cafe offers a nice breakfast, sandwiches and quiches. The true delight however, is their amazing coffee and cakes, which are served all day!
3. El Buen Pastor: By far one of Cusco's best sweet shops, this sensational bakery has an enormous variety of savory and sweet homemade pastries and absolutely divine cakes.
