cartagena (1) Cartagena de Indias, is one of, if not Colombia's most visited and beloved tourist destinations. Offering great history, beaches, nightlife, restaurants and more, this vivacious seaside city is a perfect travel destination for backpackers, couples and families alike.

Cartagena has a number of great places and activities to see and do. If you find yourself with only a couple days in the city, makes sure you see these interesting and fun places:

 1. Centro Amurallado: This old walled area is the heart of Cartagena, and once protected the city from pirates and storms. Still within the walls one can find stunning colonial architecture, churches, convents and great plazas. The most popular plazas and accommodations are in El Centro. For those on a smaller budget the are of Getsemani is less expensive and definitely worth a daytime walk.
2. Playa Blanca: By far Cartagena's most beautiful beach, Playa Blanca lives up to its name sake. The beach features gorgeous white sands and crystal clear Caribbean waters. There are a number of great places to rent hammocks, and grab a drink and some food.
3. Las Bovedas
: A fun and peculiar shopping area, Las Bovedas once functioned as jail cells in the old fortress. Today, the rooms provide visitors with great gift and souvenir shops, as well great art gallery.
4. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas
: This is the giant fortress that towers over the city of Cartagena. The actual fortress, started in 1639 took over 150 years to complete. Today, tourists can stroll through the battlements and underground passages.
5. Rosario Islands
: Sitting just an hour away from Cartagena by boat, this small archipelago sits in the southern part of the Bay of Cartagena. It offers stunning crystal clear waters, and spectacular recreational diving.
