How to start an international youth hostel?
Thinking about an exciting career? Life has its ups and downs right?
What will be the best business a young guy/girl can have for a small amount of money?
Want to meet different people from different countries everyday? Would you like to be involved in a young atmosphere? Listen to music while working? Going out to parties with your clients?
Hostel is your answer!! Hostel they say in some of the Latin America countries like Chile. I started my first youth hostel at the age of 24… It didn’t take much. It all started in Buenos Aires. I came here to party and learn Spanish. I liked it so much I decided to stay. I loved the hostel where I first stayed. Met all these people of all ages, all having one thing in common, they were all travelers. That's how I met my girl friend as well. Sleeping in a shared dormitory room didn’t give me much privacy, but I got another precious thing that was so worth it…
How does one create a hostel? First get a business plan.
This plan should include the amount of beds you can fit in your future hostel according to local rules and the size of your place, considering the amount of bathroom and common space you have. Find information about what it takes to have employees and also the risks involved in hiring someone. Usually having a bar is a good way to get a second income.
Do the math on how much you can charge for beds or private rooms. This should be at least 4 times more than your rent in order for it to be profitable.
I would say you should have an idea or concept about what type of hostel you want. The party place or the chilled quiet non smoking one. Backpackers want to go to cheap inexpencive places so choose the safest location you can find. If in the city, it has to be close to the subway, or other bus lines. It should be close to cafes, bars, squares, and if talking about a real natural place, it should have a great view.
After choosing a location, you decide if you are going to buy or rent. Start looking at ads in the paper or maybe online, go visit local real estate agencies and find the best place. Before looking for a place, you should really find out all about the local rules and codes in order to have this kind of business. In Argentina for example, the local city government has crazy requirements. The name is the license which is called Habilitation. You should know and be aware of the local codes that will allow you to maintain a legal business. Ask an experience architect about the quality of the property you are getting. Get a good local lawyer to advise you on the legal issues, and most important, get a good accountant. Consulting with as many professionals is practically obligatory. All this costs money but all together opening a hostel is a great business and a great way to maintain a young life style.
Once you did get you hostel filled with backpackers, you will need a good online travel reservation system.
