I started my first youth hostel at the age of 24…  It didn’t take much. It all started in Buenos Aires. I came here to party and learn Spanish. I liked it so much I decided to stay.

Sao Paolo

There are plenty of inexpensive hostels throughout the city offering safe, clean, budget lodging options.  You can meet plenty of other backpackers to enjoy your travels with and the staff is usually more than happy to help direct your way through the city. The best part of traveling on a budget in a city as big as Sao Paolo is you can get anything you want at a variety of prices, so as long as you can find your way there anything is possible.

Santiago de Chile

Salvador de Bahia
 
Backpacking through Bahia you can’t help but get caught up in the unique culture and great energy of the place.  Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities for travelers to learn a bit and get themselves involved.  Prepare yourself to hit the clubs by taking some cheap, pay-as-you-go Afro-Brazilian dance classes at one of the many schools in town.

Rio de Janeiro

There are plenty of hostels in Rio for every budget, and for the majority of the year they are very inexpensive, offering great accommodation that allows you to meet other backpackers to go out and enjoy your travels with.  During Carnaval and New Years prices are hiked up considerably, but are still much cheaper than any other accommodation option.

With uneven development and strict historical preservation, visitors to Quito can see a little bit of everything, from old colonial buildings to sparkling new high-rises, abject poverty to the highest luxury.  A trip to Quito guarantees that you will get a taste of all Latin America has to offer, even on the tightest budget.

Panama City
 
The wealthiest city in Panama, with a fascinating modern history, Panama City is a thriving economic center with modern skyscrapers and old colonial ruins lying nearly side by side.  Though not as cheap as many other destinations in Latin America, the unique culture and tropical pace of Panama City make it an  ideal backpacker’s destination.

Montevideo
 
A small capital in a tiny country, Montevideo has often been overlooked by travelers in favor of neighboring giant Buenos Aires.  But Uruguay’s quaint capital has much to offer on its own, besides its proximity to Argentina.  Beautiful buildings, white sandy beaches, and a quiet sophistication, not to mention low prices and favorable exchange rates, are all reason enough to make a stop in Montevideo during your Latin American travels.
