CUSCO, PERU
Cusco was the capital city for both the immense Incan Empire and a major cultural center for the Spanish conquistadores. After being conquered by Pizzaro, it became the center of Christianity and Spanish colonization in the region.
Three unique cultures layer one on top of the other to form the foundations of this great city, considered the most beautiful in Peru. The Killke culture built some of the massive stone ruins found today in the city during their time there between 900 and 1200 AD. Once the Incas took over, the simply rebuilt upon the existing structures in their own architectural style, just as the Spanish rebuilt upon Incan foundations when they arrive in the 16th century. In some buildings that have been restored, the three layers of history can be seen one upon the other.
Already the central regional hub for the Inca, the Spanish increased the importance of the city by making it a major center for agriculture and mining, as well as building many fantastic churches, cathedrals, universities and more. Cusco is the most visited tourist destination in Peru, in part because of its incredible architectural wonders and in part due to its proximity to Machu Picchu.
Cusco has lots of places to stay, but you'll be seriously hard-pressed to find better quality, value, and location than these
hostels in Cusco. Pick from two locations on the Plaza de Armas, a cozy artsy neighborhood, or a romantic bed and breakfast just steps from the main plaza!
