AREQUIPA, PERU
Arequipa is known as the White City because most of the beautiful churches and colonial buildings there were built by the Spanish out of pearly, white volcanic rock called sillar. The enormous 19,000 foot volcano, El Misti, looms of the city. It had large eruptions five hundred years ago but today is considered inactive. In winter, the peak is covered in snow, while in the summer months the brown sandy slopes are evident all the way to the top. Arequipa is the commercial center of the country and second largest city, and its historic mix of European, colonial and indigenous influences made it a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, in part due to the excellent condition of the architecture. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru, with stunning colonial buildings and plazas.
