When to go:
Pucon has a temperate but rainy climate. It never gets very hot nor very cold. Raincoats should be carried year-round. Pucon can be visited any time of year, but if you are interested in water sports summer (Dec-Feb) is certainly your best bet.

How to get there:
There are several options for travelers of every budget to get to Pucon. Three main roads lead to Pucon and buses can be taken along any of them from major cities in Chile as well as Argentina. The trip from Santiago is 789 kilometers and takes around 9 or 10 hours and is generally done overnight. Pucon can be reached by Puerto Mott, in the south, in 5 or 6 hours. From San Martin de Los Andes, in Argentina, the bus trip is 242 km to Pucon. Many bus companies travel each of these roads. Service from Santiago and the South runs every day, and from Argentina every day but Sunday. Buses are the clear best option for backpackers on a budget. For those with a little more cash and a little less time, travel can be done from Santiago by air. The airport in Pucon has daily service to Santiago only in the summers (Jan-Feb) and some long weekends. The trip takes one hour. The rest of the year planes can be taken to Temuco from Santiago daily, after which buses leave every 15 minutes to make the 90 minute trip from Temuco to Pucon.

Dangers:

Visa Information:
Visas are not required for citizens of most countries,, with the exception of New Zealand, Cuba, most African and some Eastern European countries. Travelers from other countries will be granted a 90 day tourist visa when they enter the country. When crossing into Chile at the Santiago airport, a 'reciprocity fee' may be assessed depending on the country of origin. This fee varies based on what the country of origin charges Chilean citizens for entering their county, but is around US$100 for US citizens, US$132 for Canadians, and US$30 for Australians. This fee is normally not assessed when crossing into Chile by boat or land.

Tipping:
At restaurants the normal tip is 10%, though 15% is always appreciated for excellent service. Slightly less is generally given in bars and cafes, and porters generally receive an amount corresponding to 50 cents per bag. Taxi drivers are not tipped.
