Main Attractions

* Explore the Fort Sao Mateus. It was built in 1616 by Francisco Frias and is a good way to get a dose of culture after lounging on the beach for days.

* Lounge on the beach for days! The most popular is Praia do Forte located in the center of town but there are others to the North and South that are worth checking out.

* Like fishing? Head to nearby Sao Pedro da Aldeia this small fishing town and former Jesuit mission has a ton of places to cast your line in or book a deep sea fishing trip.

* Check out the Museu Oceanográfico (Oceanographic Museum) where you can see old fishing tools and marine life on display.

* Grab your board and catch some waves. DonŽt know how? There are plenty of surf shops in town offering group or private lessons.

When to go

Cabo Frio has a humid tropical climate. The average temperature is 25ºC. It rains fairly often and sponatneously so pack a raincoat or umbrella!

How to get there

You can hop a bus from Rio or Sao Paolo. Buses usually leave every half hour and the most popular company is Viaçao.

Visa information

US Citizens require a visa in order to enter Brazil. Citizens of Israel, Great Britain, and most EU countries do not require a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. If you are in doubt about whether you require a visa to enter Brazil, check with your embassy or online.

Tipping

At restaurants a service charge of approximately 10% is generally added to the bill. It is always identified that this charge is not obligatory, and any more than this is certainly not expected. Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped, but fares may be rounded up to the nearest Real so no one has to deal with change.
